about

"Of Sleep” is a firm meditation on a more simplified, ambient-leaning set of compositions that waver between down to earth methods of writing, such as acoustic guitar recorded to an iPhone in my living room, to more “otherworldly, ethereal, and surreal" drones made of manipulated vocal samples, tape loops, and evolving synth pads. There was an extreme focus on textures and feeling rather than the grooves or pop sensibilities of last year’s “Apricity”. Stylistically speaking, “Of Sleep" is much closer to the music for film that I did for “Jim of Earth”, or the center parts of “Music from Seeking a Scientist".
I was trying to cut things down to their most central components, sometimes having no more than 2-6 tracks. I also really gave myself a pass on edits, letting myself live with all the mistakes made in my performances, which felt like a first. This may be the most patient and slowly evolving I’ve allowed any of my works to be. I tried composing things that reminded me of pivotal, emotional moments in my life—some remembered, some half-imagined and weathered by memory, similar to recalling waking dreams from half a life ago. I then fleshed those ideas out, similar to how I would compose for film.
It’s been a grueling, busy year; this was my reprieve to unwind from it and process some memories along the way. I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you for supporting DIY music.
